[Image] Art has been a voice for many generations. Through art, many have found the ability to speak out about social, political and psychological issues. There has been a rash outbreak of art censorship in recent years as well as an enormous decline in funding for the arts. Artists have found themselves loosing funding, having their artwork removed from galleries and exhibits and taken away from college campuses. Artists are loosing their ability to freely express issues that are controversial or unpopular to the public such as: nudity, political ideas (most recently anti-war), feminist issues, free speech, etc. For more information on Art Censorship and what you can do, visit the: a href= http://www.ncac.org/projects/artsadvocacy.html National Coalition Against Censorship /a

[Image] b There's been a lot of talk on Censorship over the past week. I thought I'd have a look at what others have said regarding this subject in the past... /b quot;Dat veniam corvis, vexat censura columbas. - b quot;Censure acquits the raven, but pursues the dove. quot; /b Decimus Junius Juvenalis (Juvenal), Satires, II. 63. Roman rhetorician and satirical poet (1st to 2nd cent. A.D.) quot;Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? - b quot;Who will watch the watchers? quot; /b Juvenal b quot;I cannot and will not cut my conscience to fit this year's fashions. quot; /b Lillian Hellman, subpoenaed to appear before the House Un-American Activities Committee, 1952 b quot; They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. quot; /b Benjamin Franklin, Historical Review of Pennsylvania, 1759 b quot;We live in oppressive times. We have, as a nation, become our own thought police; but instead of calling the process by which we limit our expression of dissent and wonder quot;censorship, quot; we call it quot;concern for commercial viability. /b David Mamet quotes (American Playwright, b.1947) b quot;Though I disagree with everything you say, I will defend to the death your right to say it. quot; /b - atribbuted to a scholar studying Voltaire... summing up his beliefs b quot;Without free speech no search for truth is possible... no discovery of truth is useful... Better a thousandfold abuse of free speech than denial of free speech. The abuse dies in a day, but the denial slays the life of the people, and entombs the hope of the race. quot; /b Charles Bradlaugh b quot; The fact is that censorship always defeats its own purpose, for it creates, in the end, the kind of society that is incapable of exercising real discretion. quot; /b Henry Steele Commager b quot;We are not afraid to entrust the American people with unpleasant facts, foreign ideas, alien philosophies, and competitive values. For a nation that is afraid to let its people judge the truth and falsehood in an open market is a nation that is afraid of its people. quot; /b John F. Kennedy b quot;Free societies...are societies in motion, and with motion comes tension, dissent, friction. Free people strike sparks, and those sparks are the best evidence of freedom's existence. quot; /b Salman Rushdie b Pontius Pilate was the first great censor, and Jesus Christ the first great victim of censorship. /b Ben Lindsay b quot;Censorship ends in logical completeness when nobody is allowed to read any books except the books that nobody reads. quot; /b George Bernard Shaw b quot;Adam was but human - this explains it all. He did not want the apple for the apple's sake, he wanted it only because it was forbidden. The mistake was in not forbidding the serpent; then he would have eaten the serpent. quot; /b Mark Twain

[Image] Front view of the Anti-Bush Birdhouse Rejected by Arts Alliance. Overview of the controversy. HONESDALE - Home Tweet Home- unless that home is the White House portrayed as a birdhouse where birds may rest on the nose of the Chief Occupant. Rev. Glenn Of Trees, creator of the house complained that the Alliance would not accept what amounts to a political statement. Painted white, the birdhouse has an image of President George W. Bush in center, with a “Pinocchio nose” serving as the rest for visiting birds, the entrance hole in Bush's forehead. Adorning the sides are pieces of word art aimed at Bush, such as “Donkey Show” and “I scream, you scream, we all scream.” Wording on the eaves declare, “This White House, by George, is for the birds!!” The Arts Alliance supplies the object for the artist to paint or decorate; a business is found which gives a donation to the Alliance and agrees to show the birdhouse through the summer. A map is published for the public to go and see the creations, read who the sponsor is and the artist. Then an auction is held where the art works raise money for the Alliance, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting the art world locally. This is the third year for sidewalk art; the first year they had deer sculptures, the second, Adirondack chairs. ‘Home Tweet Home” is the name of the 2006 birdhouse project. Glenn says this is censorship of the arts, and that the Alliance refused to find a sponsor, and was given no guidelines before he made his work. Glenn considers the Bush birdhouse humorous, and his art form. Full story by Peter Becker in the Honesdale-Wayne Independent. Honesdale Pennsylvania.
